My boyfriend

...and where I met him
My boyfriend
Benedetta Mattei

So. I got myself a boyfriend. Actually, no. I'm not engaged. I have a boyfriend. Who is my boyfriend. His name is Davide. Goodness, how handsome he is! He's gorgeous. He's kind and shy. I'm not sure he's understood that I'm his girlfriend. I keep telling him over and over. But I don't know if it's sunk into his head. Anyway, just to be safe, I tell everyone, so that everyone knows. Maybe that way it'll reach him too. I introduced myself to his mother. I said: "I'm your son's girlfriend, isn't he handsome!". She shook my hand. But she didn't know what to say to me. And she said almost nothing. I did all the talking. Maybe they're a family that doesn't talk much. But I sure do talk, plenty of it.

Everyone asks me where I met Davide. Easiest answer ever. On Wednesdays, when we have our meeting with the Association at Piazza Bologna. And we do activities together. Every so often we have an evening get-together instead, at the pizzeria, to celebrate someone's birthday. Davide joined the group recently. The last birthday was Fatima's, and not just hers. They decided to have the party at a pub. I was very much against it. At a pub you eat sandwiches, and that's fine. They're good, but the pub is absurd because it has tall chairs and tall tables. Climbing onto the chair is really hard. And then I get anxious and I'm afraid of taking a big tumble onto the floor. I can't eat in peace. And I can't talk to Davide in peace.

Lucky break, though. The pub was closed, so we went to our usual pizzeria and managed to eat even without a reservation. At the pizzeria, now that makes sense. You sit wherever you want and the chairs are right, as low as they ought to be. You don't have to climb up like at the pub. You order a nice supplì and a croquette, and then whatever pizza you like. Someone orders pasta. And then the cake with candles, because it's a birthday. You just have to be very careful where you sit, because afterward it's hard to move. Here's what I do. I spot Davide and follow him, and when he sits down I sit right next to him, and I don't move for any reason. If someone tells me to move, I pretend not to hear. And if they insist, I make a real fuss. But I ask you, I'm his girlfriend and he's my boyfriend, so of course we have to sit next to each other at the pizzeria.
